Department of the Air Force, Special Orders GB-120 (November 22, 1991)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Brian Robert Sherer, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life near Fairbanks, Alaska, on 2 May 1991. On that date, Sergeant Sherer rescued thirteen people from their homes during a major flood. Despite the multiple hazards of possible drowning, hypothermia, electrocution, and flash fires, Sergeant Sherer worked in 38-degree-Fahrenheit flood waters for six hours ensuring all victims were evacuated. Battling exhaustion and the loss of feeling in his legs, Sergeant Sherer entered the frigid waters for the final time to manually tow a fellow fire fighter and two victims to safety after numerous large chunks of ice made it impossible to paddle the rescue boat. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Sergeant Sherer has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
