The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Master Sergeant Donald E. Catalano, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Maunalua Bay, Oahu, Hawaii, on 30 March 1991. On that date, Sergeant Catalano swam into the area of a jet ski accident. With complete disregard for his own safety and despite the hazards of the open ocean, the extremely high surf conditions, and the exposed reefs, Sergeant Catalano unhesitatingly dove into the ocean and persevered in his humanitarian rescue efforts until he successfully extracted the victim. His quick actions and willingness to help others prevented a potential fatality. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Catalano reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
