The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Henry L. S. Jezek (ASN: 0-2330854), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Jezek distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 8 April 1969 while serving as Commanding Officer, Company A, 2d Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. After his company came in contact with an enemy force, Captain Jezek continually exposed himself to hostile fire while moving among his unit directing maneuvers and encouraging his men. Then, disregarding his own safety, he led an assault against an enemy position that had been placing effective fire against his unit. His courageous actions and skillful handling of his company’s defense resulted in a rout of the enemy force without any friendly casualties. Captain Jezek’s extraordinary heroism in close combat with an armed hostile force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
