The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Michael T. Scott, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy. On 29 October 1977, Private Scott, Company B, 2d Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, was driving along Ocean View Boulevard, Pacific Grove, California. At that time Mr. Jack L. Reynolds was swept from the rocks by an unusually large breaker. Private Scott rushed to the scene. Realizing that no rescue assistance was being rendered from the crowd and without regard for his own safety, he entered the extremely frigid, heavy surf. Swimming approximately 80 feet through 20-foot seas, Private Scott made repeated rescue attempts before the victim succumbed to the heavy seas. This extraordinary bravery and heroism exhibited by Private Scott is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
