The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant [then Specialist Fourth Class] George Stephen Sehi (ASN: US-56701086), United States Army, for gallantry in action against a hostile force on 8 January 1968 in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Sehi distinguished himself while serving as a squad leader in Company D, 3d Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 196th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division on 8 January 1968. On that date, Specialist Sehi was leading his squad on a combat operations in the Que Son Valley. In pursuit of a group of enemy soldiers, his squad came under intense enemy mortar and automatic weapons fire. Upon seeing that his machine gun crew had been hit, Specialist Sehi unhesitatingly took over the position and fired a suppressive barrage of rounds at the enemy position. Ordering his men to withdraw, he continued to fire on the attacking force in order to cover his squad’s movement. Even after his men had withdrawn, Specialist Sehi refused to leave his position and continued the output of fire power until the enemy completely enveloped his position. Specialist Sehi gave the supreme sacrifice of his life in order to insure that his men could reach safety. His exceptionally heroic action and personal bravery demonstrate unquestionable valor in close combat against a numerically superior hostile fore. Specialist Sehi’s unshaken courage and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
