The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Louis R. Jarodsky (ASN: US-53425509), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy. Sergeant Jarodsky distinguished himself on 17 June 1967, during rescue operations after an airplane crash at An Khe, Republic of Vietnam. Upon observing the large C-130 aircraft leave the runway and burst into flames, Sergeant Jarodsky, realizing that many of the passengers on board were probably trapped in the aircraft, ran to the wreckage to give assistance to any survivors. Upon arriving at the aircraft, Sergeant Jarodsky began to help evacuate the passengers who were assembling in the front portion of the burning plane. As the crash unit on station attempted to control the fire and rescue personnel trapped in the center and rear portions of the aircraft, Sergeant Jarodsky voluntarily returned to the front portion of the plane and carried several people away from the flaming wreckage. Due in large part to his courage and determination, several people were saved from the aircraft. Sergeant Jarodsky’s display of personal bravery and concern for the welfare of his fellow soldiers is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
