The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Thomas J. Lyon (AFSN: 0-3210789), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in Southeast Asia on 5 March 1971. On that date, Lieutenant Lyon commanded the initial efforts of rescue forces tasked to save seven airmen downed in an extremely hostile area. In spite of the battle damage his aircraft received, he bravely continued to expose himself in order to pinpoint the survivors’ position and to attack the lethal gun positions that denied rescue helicopters any access to the area. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Lyon has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
