The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Machinist’s Mate First Class James J. Logan, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving on the U.S.S. VICTOR. On the occasion of an explosion in a motor crank case and resulting fire in the engine room at sea, on 10 February 1918, which became very dangerous on account of the proximity of the main gasoline tank, Machinist’s Mate First Class Logan, accompanied by the Commanding Officer, went into the engine room repeatedly, were much burned, but by use of the fire extinguishers succeeded in putting out the fire and saving the ship.
