The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Sergeant Marcus Dwayne Smith, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life near Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea, on 7 August 1981. On that date, Sergeant Smith rushed to a burning building. With complete disregard for his own safety and despite the hazards of raging flames, Sergeant Smith unhesitatingly entered the engulfed building and persevered in his humanitarian efforts until he succeeded in removing one of the injured victims to a place of safety. His subsequent first aid actions restored life to the victim. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Sergeant Smith reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
