The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Maximiliano T. Armijo, Jr. (ASN: 25637879), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Command and Control Detachment, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant First Class Armijo distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions from 29 to 31 March 1967 while serving as Special Forces advisor to a Vietnamese army unit on a search and destroy mission deep in hostile territory. Shortly after infiltration the unit was pinned down by heavy automatic weapons fire from a numerically superior enemy force. Seeing another advisor wounded and unable to move, Sergeant Armijo moved across the bullet-swept opening close to the enemy positions to treat his wounds and repel numerous attempts by the insurgents to reach the fallen man. When a section of the perimeter was overrun and captured by the Viet Cong, he led a fierce rifle and grenade attack to regain the lost terrain. With complete disregard for his own safety, he led yet another assault on two enemy machine gun positions and attempted to knock out the guns which were inflicting heavy casualties on the friendly forces. Seriously wounded in the attack, Sergeant Armijo continued to repulse repeated assaults by the determined enemy. Later, wounded again, he courageously rallied his men despite his injuries. Sergeant First Class Armijo’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
