The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain George W. Acree, II (AFSN: FR-58830), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-105F pilot near Hanoi, North Vietnam, on 28 February 1968. On that date, Captain Acree flew a surface-to-air missile suppression mission supporting four F-4 aircraft as they attacked a vital barracks area five miles from Hanoi. Although subjected to attack by eight hostile missiles and under extremely adverse weather conditions, Captain Acree disregarded his personal safety to remain within range of concentrated hostile defenses to aggressively attack missile sites surrounding Hanoi and contributed to the safe return of all friendly aircraft. During this mission Captain Acree collected tactical information critical to the successful employment of a new weapon system. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Acree reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
