The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Ernest Taso Scambos (AFSN: FR-28922), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller in Chung Thien Province, Republic of Vietnam on 21 January 1967. On that date, Major Scambos was Forward Air Controller on a strike against hostile supply sampans and installations. During the attack against the target he continually displayed great courage by attracting automatic weapons fire by keeping on his rotating beacon to pin-point the gun positions and protect the fighters on their passes. Major Scambos directed two air strikes and a AC-47 in the attack and was instrumental in destroying a heavy supply facility. With perturbable determination Major Scambos destroyed three heavy automatic weapons positions. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Scambos reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
