The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Airman Second Class Ronald Floyd Malone (AFSN: AF-15716898), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an HH-3E Flight Engineer near the Demilitarized Zone, Republic of Vietnam, on 14 March 1967. On that date, Airman Malone proceeded from a forward operating site into an area of intense hostile activity to recover the survivors of two downed Marine helicopters. With complete disregard for his own safety, Airman Malone deliberately exposed himself to the same hostile fire that had downed the Marine aircraft, by standing in the open doorway of his helicopter and operating the rescue hoist until all the survivors were successfully retrieved. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Airman Malone reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
