The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Evan G. Thompson, Jr. (AFSN: FV-3037962), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Rescue Crew Commander of an unarmed HH-3E Helicopter in Southeast Asia on 3 August 1967. On that date, Captain Thompson persevered in the search for an Air Force pilot downed in unfriendly territory until he was successful in locating the pilot. With great determination and superior airmanship, Captain Thompson hovered his helicopter in turbulent winds for more than thirty minutes until the downed pilot could be safely hoisted aboard the helicopter. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Thompson reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
