The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) Paul Henry Mahoney, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 20th Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Salinas, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 19 June 1945. When an attack against a strong, determined enemy was stalemated, Colonel Mahoney, realizing the importance of the objective, moved forward to the leading platoon to survey the situation, He then worked his way despite sporadic enemy fire, to the lead scouts and gave suggestions and encouragement. He suggested routes ad means of advance to overcome the enemy opposition, and then directed fire of an attached platoon of tanks. After the objective had been seized, Colonel Mahoney personally organized the elements of his command and consolidated the position. His aggressive leadership, excellent tactical planning, and presence with assault troops were materially responsible for the securing of the objective with a minimum of casualties and proved an inspiration to his officers and men. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Mahoney, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
