The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) to Private First Class James M. Snell, Corps of Engineers, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands, on 18 February 1950. While swimming with a companion north of Eniwetok Island he noticed his friend was in distress. He swam promptly to his friend’s aid and supported him until he was able to swim for shore. As they neared the beach, Private Snell, exhausted by his efforts, was unable to reach safety and was drowned. The heroism and self-sacrifice displayed by Private Snell on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
