The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Floyd R. Ward, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving as Assistant Post Engineer at Camp Taejon, Taejon, Korea, in saving the life of Corporal John W. Griener, an electrician of the 517th Engineer Utilities Detachment. On the morning of 12 September 1948, a fire of undetermined origin occurred in the Consolidated Mess Hall, Taejon, Korea. It was deemed necessary that the high wires leading from the mess hall would have to be cut to prevent the fire from spreading to the rest of the hospital. Corporal John W. Griener was selected for this hazardous work. Upon reaching the top of the high tension pole, he came in contact with a live wire, and was immediately rendered unconscious and in danger of losing his life. Lieutenant Ward, with complete disregard for his personal safety, climbed the pole and, upon reaching the top, carefully removed Corporal Griener from the live wires. Lieutenant Ward’s courage, alertness, and initiative were one of the main factors in saving the life of Corporal John Griener and his act of heroism displayed on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
