The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Master Sergeant Rufus N. Lindsey (ASN: 6875025), United States Army Air Forces, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while a member of 2518th Army Air Forces Base Unit, Enid Army Air Field, Oklahoma. He was leaving his home at Jefferson, Oklahoma, on the morning of 9 December 1946, for duty at the Army air base when he noticed his neighbor’s house afire. With total disregard for his safety, Sergeant Lindsey helped the father remove two children from the burning building and tried to save a third child, but the opening of a door in the building caused a blast of flame that rendered this second brave attempt to save life unsuccessful. Sergeant Lindsey’s heroism is in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service.
