Department of the Army, General Orders No. 14 (March 4, 1949)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technical Sergeant Jesse L Hinely (ASN: 84208126), United States Army Air Forces, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 1 August 1943, in contributing to the rescue of two Army officers from certain death in a wrecked and flaming airplane, from which he had escaped. With complete disregard for his safety, he and First Lieutenant Lloyd W. Reese, Jr., voluntarily risked their lives by re-approaching the aircraft and rescuing First Lieutenant Walter M. Sorensen and First Lieutenant Robert R. Snyder, who were trapped in the pilot’s compartment. Without this heroic action displayed by Sergeant Hinely, the two officers would have perished in the flaming wreck.
