The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Air Corps), [then First Lieutenant] Lloyd W. Reese, Jr., United States Army Air Forces, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in contributing to the rescue of two officers from certain death in a wrecked and flaming airplane, from which he had escaped. With complete disregard for his safety, Captain Reese and Technical Sergeant Jesse L. Hinley voluntarily risked their lives by re-approaching the aircraft and rescuing First Lieutenant Walter M. Sorensen and First Lieutenant Robert R. Snyder who were trapped in the pilot’s compartment. Without this action, these two officers would have perished in the flaming wreck.
