The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fifth Grade [then Private] Hobert K. Fry, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in saving an enlisted man from drowning in the Brazos River, near Mineral Wells, Texas, on 26 July 1941. When his companion, who could not swim, was wading in shallow water, he slipped and fell into a deep hole. Technician Fry suddenly realized that his companion had been under the surface too long and, without thought of his own safety, swam to the spot where he had last seen him. Upon treating the unconscious man under water, Technician Fry succeeded in carrying him to shore, where he immediately administered artificial respiration and thereby saved his life. The heroism displayed by Technician Fry on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
