Department of the Army, General Orders No. 71 (October 29, 1948)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Angelus J. Haberstock, United States Army Air Forces, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in rescuing an enlisted man from a burning airplane at Lovell Field, Chattanooga, Tennessee, on 12 June 1941. When a type A-20A airplane crashed in landing and burst into flames, Sergeant Haberstock and another enlisted man, without thought of personal safety, immediately rushed to the scene. Without considering the intense heat, smoke, and flames and not knowing the quantity of gasoline in the tanks of the airplane, they entered the gunner’s cockpit, one man from above through the solarium and the other man through the door in the bottom, succeeded in pulling the gunner, who was trapped inside, from the burning airplane, and carried him to safety, thereby saving his life. The heroism displayed on this occasion by Sergeant Haberstock reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
