The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Second Lieutenant (Corps of Military Police), [then Sergeant] Harold C. Milliken (ASN: 6544559), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in saving his company commander and others from serious injury, perhaps death, when threatened by an armed soldier at Fayetteville, North Carolina, on 31 January 1941. When his company commander was threatened by an armed soldier with a Colt .45 automatic pistol, near a caf, Lieutenant Milliken, with great presence of mind, slipped out of the crowd, around to the back of the caf, and through the front door. With coolness and great courage, and without fear of bodily harm to himself, he leaped upon the armed soldier, grasped his arm, and turned the pistol from the officer. In so doing, he facilitated the disarming of the man. The courage and presence of mind displayed by Lieutenant Milliken on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
