The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Staff Sergeant Herbert Gross (ASN: 32439309), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. Between 25 November 1943 and 19 August 1944, he took part in 200 or more hours of combat flight from bases in China in heavy bombardment type aircraft. Heavy damage was inflicted on the enemy in his actions, which were directed at concentrations of troops and supplies, transportation systems and air bases. His flights extended throughout China and Burma, where heavy enemy opposition from hostile aircraft and ground installations was encountered frequently. Many flights were made over rugged terrain and through adverse weather. In spite of the hazards, he carried out his missions with courage and determination, which reflects great credit upon himself and the Army Air Forces.
