Richard Wentworth graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1929. After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. He retired in 1958 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Colonel (Air Corps) Richard David Wentworth, United States Army Air Forces, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Chief of Operations Branch, Intelligence, U.S. Forces European Theater, later redesignated Headquarters European Command from July 1945 to September 1947. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Colonel Wentworth and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces. (This award supersedes the award of the Army Commendation Ribbon to Colonel Wentworth for service from 14 July 1945 to 25 August 1946.)
