The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Edwin A. Lynch, Jr., United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Troop C, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, on 15 June 1947. Seeing a soldier struggling desperately in the Sumida River and calling for help, without hesitation and with total disregard for his personal safety, Private Lynch plunged into the river and swam to his assistance. He reached the drowning man about the same time as another soldier and together they managed to reach shore safely. The drowning man was then revived by artificial respiration.
