Lieutenant Colonel Carroll directed capture and retention of the town. He went forward to encourage his men several times under intense enemy artillery, machine gun, and rifle fire and by his magnificent leadership succeeded in repulsing the enemy’s strong counter-attack and during the following three days succeeded in driving off four more of the enemy’s determined attacks.
