The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Armor) Roger T. MacLeod (ASN: 0-5007697), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain MacLeod distinguished himself as Commanding Officer of Troop E, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment on a routine convoy mission. An armored cavalry assault vehicle struck an old French mine, causing it to overturn and burst into flames and grenades, ammunition and claymore mines aboard to explode. Captain MacLeod called for a medical evacuation helicopter, then rushed to the scene of the accident to direct the recovery of the casualties. Disregarding his own personal safety, Captain MacLeod took immediate steps to right the burning vehicle and pry open the ramp to evacuate a man trapped inside. Captain MacLeod’s courageous and immediate actions directly resulted in saving the lives of three crew members. Captain MacLeod’s heroic actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
