The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Private First Class Major W. Evitts, Jr., United States Army, for heroic achievement in action on 29 April 1945, near Tarbole, Italy. Following an amphibious landing in support of mountain infantry troops attacking an enemy held town, Private First Class Evitts helped set up howitzers which advanced down a road, firing at targets of opportunity in direct support of the fighting rifle troops. Although under direct enemy observation and frequently fired on by high velocity artillery, Private First Class Evitts, undaunted continued counter-firing throughout the day, remaining at his weapon until hostile fire had been neutralized. The unit was experiencing its first use of assault weapons and the whole hearted cooperation of all members was essential. Private First Class Evitts performing his duties calmly under fire and with heroic determination upheld the highest traditions of the United States Army.
