The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Howard T. Comer (ASN: W-3155218), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Comer distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 14 December 1967, while serving as section leader for Battery C, 2d Battalion, 20th Artillery, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a fire mission near Tam Ky, Republic of Vietnam. When an infantry unit came under intense enemy fire, Warrant Officer Comer made repeated rocket runs against the well entrenched enemy force. Although his aircraft received heavy volumes of enemy fire, he returned three times with additional ammunition in order to silence the enemy positions. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
