The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Carl B. Smith (ASN: 0-2206208), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 26 September 1950, near Chinju, Korea, hostile troops were entrenched on a hill adjacent to Lieutenant Smith’s position. Although constantly exposed to heavy enemy machine gun fire he quickly organized and led a counterattack. Crawling from theirman to man, he supervised their fire and movements so skillfully that the enemy were routed with heavy casualties while none were sustained among friendly troops. Lieutenant Smith’s courage, determination and inspirational leadership reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
