The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private John C. Scott (ASN: RA-15291395), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 19 February 1951, near Panpo-ri, Korea Private Scott was a radio operator assigned to a reinforced rifle platoon, which had the mission of clearing the surrounding hills of enemy forces. As the patrol proceeded along its route it came under a hail of deadly enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire, completely pinning the patrol down and halting its advance along the valley. The platoon was in an exposed and precarious position and could not advance, withdraw, or maneuver to any position which offered cover from the devastating fire. The patrol leader attempted to call for assistance over his radio but the radio failed to operate. Private Scott, with complete disregard for his personal safety, then unhesitatingly dashed through the fire swept valley to a radio mounted on a vehicle that had been knocked out by enemy fire. In the face of deadly fire from nearby enemy positions, he remained with the vehicle until he succeeded in getting the radio in operation and received an answer that help was on the way. His courage and initiative were responsible for the timely rescue of his comrades from their dangerous position. The heroism and devotion to duty displayed by Private Scott reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
