The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Jose Rodrigvez (Rodriguez) (ASN: RA-29182594), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 24 April and during the early morning hours of 25 April 1953, elements of Company F, 2d Battalion, of which Sergeant Rodrigvez was a member, were defending their positions on Outpost “Harry”, in the vicinity of Surang-ni, Korea, against a numerically superior hostile attack which was preceded by a mortar and artillery barrage. During the initial phase of the onslaught, it was necessary for friendly troops to withdraw to more tenable positions. Sergeant Rodrigvez was located in a machine gun position. He accounted for a large number of enemy casualties and at one time, when he ran out of ammunition, grappled in hand-to-hand combat with an enemy soldier and inflicted mortal injuries to him. By staying at his positions with the machine gun, he was responsible for an innumerable number of hostile casualties. Sergeant Rodrigvez’ outstanding gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
