The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Joseph Ouellette (ASN: RA-11013159), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 28 November 1950, near Torgon-ni, Korea, Sergeant Ouellette had deployed his squad as flank protection for the company which was advancing toward high ground. During the advance the company received intense enemy small arms fire. Acting on his own initiative, with complete disregard for his personal safety, he led his squad in a successful assault on the enemy position and then received a heavy amount of fire from another enemy position. Sergeant Ouellette maneuvered his squad and secured the second enemy position. When the enemy commenced withdrawing, Sergeant Ouellette unhesitatingly moved through heavy enemy fire, secured a sixty millimeter mortar and a fifty-seven millimeter rifle squad, and led them back to his assault position. He successfully directed the fire upon the enemy inflicting heavy casualties. The heroic action of Sergeant Ouellette, the personal courage, and the leadership displayed by him on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
