The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Field Artillery) William Campbell Lucas, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 48th Field Artillery Battalion, 7th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Attu, Kiska, Territory of Alaska, from 11 to 16 May 1943. Colonel Lucas landed with his battalion at Massacre Bay on 11 May 1943, and directed his battalion in covering the entire battle area from their positions on the beach. For Five days he directed artillery fire in support of the landings, despite almost constant small arms fire. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Lucas, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
