During the night of 28 – 29 November 1950, in the vicinity of Sochang-ni, Korea, two enemy regiments attacked the 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry. Colonel Heinrich effectively directed defensive artillery and mortar fire despite a direct hit on the battalion command post which cut off all communications. Colonel Heinrich, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, moved from position to position while under intense enemy assault fire to direct fire and initiate the restoration of communications. The effective fire directed by Colonel Heinrich inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy and forced the enemy to withdraw. Colonel Heinrich personally visited each company and initiated vigorous patrolling action to eliminate enemy penetrations. He also directed friendly air attacks against the enemy.
