The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Malcolm Alonzo Gibbs (ASN: 0-2004791), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. In the early morning hours of 28 October 1952, Company F was assigned the mission of attacking enemy positions on a hill in the vicinity of Kangonongni, Korea. As the elements of a friendly assault group led by Lieutenant Gibbs approached their objective, they encountered intense enemy machine gun and mortar fire, rendering them confused and causing them to falter in their advance. Oblivious to the lethal hostile fire, Lieutenant Gibbs rushed across the fire-swept terrain to the front of his platoon and with words of encouragement and aggressive leadership, he so inspired his men that they quickly resumed their attack. As the friendly elements approached to within seventy five yards of their objective, the ever increasing intensity of the hostile machine gun fire again forced them to halt in their advance. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Lieutenant Gibbs procured an automatic rifle and with complete disregard for his personal safety, he subjected himself to the murderous hail of enemy machine gun fire as he boldly led a small group of men in a fanatical charge upon the hostile emplacement. Before the friendly elements successfully affected their assault and silenced the enemy machine gun, he personally killed a sniper. Lieutenant Gibbs was mortally wounded by an incoming hostile mortar round while returning from a reconnaissance after the friendly unit successfully accomplished its mission. Lieutenant Gibbs’ conspicuous gallantry, outstanding courage and inspirational leadership reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
