The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Donald L. Campbell (ASN: RA-17280678), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 18 February 1951, near Chamsil-li, Korea, Private Campbell’s platoon accompanied by tanks was reconnoitering two small villages, when one of its squads became subjected to intense enemy automatic weapons fire and pinned down. During the ensuing firefight, Private Campbell’s squad leader was hit by fire from a nearby anti-tank gun. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Campbell ran through the fusillade of enemy bullets to the side of the wounded man and picking him up, carried him toward the protection of a nearby tank. Just short of his goal, he was struck in the arm by a machine gun bullet. Undeterred by his serious wound, Private Campbell continued to move toward the tank, but in doing so was felled by another serious bullet wound preventing him from completing his brave mission. Private Campbell’s sustained courage and gallantry reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
