The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Heywood J. Bryant (ASN: RA-34892511), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 13 February 1951, in the vicinity of Suso-ri, Korea, Company D was moving into the small village of Suso-ri, which was surrounded by hills on three sides to relieve another friendly unit. Sergeant Bryant was moving ahead to select machine gun positions, when the enemy suddenly opened fire from all sides. Sergeant Bryant immediately called to place the guns in action and, from his exposed position, he observed the enemy and directed their fire on him. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he continued to direct the fire of the machine guns and knocked out one enemy gun. Shortly thereafter, the enemy attacked and succeeded in reaching a position thirty yards from the guns, cutting off Sergeant Bryant from his weapons. Although in the line of fire from his own guns, he shouted to his men to continue firing. This firing stopped the attack. He received orders to withdraw but, realizing there were many wounded personnel, he refused to leave until all wounded had been evacuated. He drove a jeep loaded with wounded out of the area and returned under fire to retrieve another. The gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty of Sergeant Bryant were an inspiration to his comrades and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
