The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Joseph F. Bruce (ASN: 0-2036629), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the withdrawal of an infantry battalion to prepared positions in the vicinity of Ipsok, Korea, on 29 November 1950, two platoons were isolated following an attack by a large hostile force. Heedless of the hazards involved, Lieutenant Bruce elected to deliver a vital message to the isolated force. Repeatedly exposing himself to intense enemy fire, he accomplished mis mission; then, reorganizing the platoon he led them to safety. Lieutenant Bruce’s valorous initiative and staunch devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
