The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] George E. Brown (ASN: 0-1925284), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 10 June and during the early morning hours of 11 June 1953, Lieutenant Brown was a platoon leader in Company E, 2d Battalion, which was assigned the mission of occupying positions on Outpost “Harry”, in the vicinity of Surang-ni, Korea. As he was deploying his men on the outpost, the hill was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force. The enemy soon gained the forward trenches and was engaging United Nations troops in hand-to-hand combat. Under an intense unfriendly artillery and mortar barrage, Lieutenant Brown regrouped his force and led them in a courageous counterattack against the enemy force. Although the foe had taken part of the hill, and was attempting to defend it, he continued his attack, firing his automatic weapon into the ranks of the enemy and throwing hand grenades as he charged. He was soon seriously wounded by an enemy grenade but, with complete disregard for his injuries, persistently moved on and repelled the enemy. Later, as he was aiding in the evacuation of casualties, he was again wounded, but refused medical aid until the outpost was cleared of all wounded personnel. Lieutenant Brown’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
