Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 42 (January 26, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Eugene Thomas Brophy (ASN: RA-13335221), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 4 October 1951, during the 1st Battalion’s attack against the well-entrenched enemy on Hill 281, near Chunse-ri, Korea, Sergeant Brophy, squad leader of the Fourth Squad of the Machine Gun Platoon, and his unit were attached to and giving support fire for Company C. Having led his men to attack positions, Sergeant Brophy, aware of the vital necessity of his unit’s support fire, aggressively led his squad in closer to the foe in order to increase the effectiveness of his supporting action. Disregarding the heavy hostile fire raking his exposed position, he gallantly revealed himself, moving among the gunners pointing out targets and encouraging the men. Sergeant Brophy’s area was suddenly subjected to an intense enemy mortar barrage under which he was struck and mortally wounded even as the enemy troops were withdrawing from their primary positions in the face of his unit’s withering fire. Sergeant Brophy’s gallant devotion to duty reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
