The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private John Brooks (ASN: US-53004766), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 October 1951, Company F moved forward to attack Hill 400, in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. The enemy strongly resisted and soon the lead platoon was pinned down by a heavy barrage of fire emanating from well-entrenched bunkers on the slope of the hill. As the unit, its advance stalled, clung precariously to the hazardous position, Private Brooks rose in the assault and courageously charged an enemy bunker in which several automatic weapons were located. As he dashed forward, his rifle jammed; but, undaunted, Private Brooks hurled several hand grenades into the position, destroying it and inflicting many casualties upon the occupying enemy troops. His fearless and voluntary removal of this lethal obstacle relieved the pressure on the platoon and allowed it to continue the attack which eventually routed the enemy, resulting in the seizure of the objective. Private Brooks’ gallant aggressiveness reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
