Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 169 (May 27, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Corporal] Clinton L. Broadwater (ASN: ER-14301377), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 29 November 1950, the second platoon of Company B was returning with a supply convoy to Majon-ni, Korea. Fourteen miles north of Majon-ni, the convoy was ambushed and was under intense enemy small arms fire the remainder of the trip. Sergeant Broadwater’s vehicle having stalled, he immediately transferred his squad to other vehicles and returning to the stalled vehicle, was able to start it although under a constant fire. Making numerous stops and assisting the wounded into the vehicle, he filled it to capacity with casualties and then with both front tires shot out, drove over the one-way mountain roads, under blackout conditions, safely into Majon-ni. The gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Broadwater reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
