The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Remer Y. Brinson (ASN: 0-61980), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the early morning hours of 24 June 1951, B Company’s positions on Hill 717 near Sobangsan, Korea, were fanatically attacked by an enemy force of approximately two-battalion strength. In the initial phase of the attack, the company commander fell seriously wounded and Lieutenant Brinson immediately assumed command. Moving from foxhole to foxhole encouraging his troops to contain the vicious assault and taking up a position fully exposed to the enemy fire, he fired magazine after magazine from his carbine and hurled grenades into the ranks of the onrushing foe, inflicting numerous casualties. Noticing that the medical aidmen, even though they were laboring as quickly as possible, could not administer to all the wounded, Lieutenant Brinson moved to within approximately 15 yards of the enemy and calmly evacuated four stricken soldiers out of range of the hostile fire. Returning to their abandoned positions, he collected the weapons which they had been forced to leave behind and distributed them to the remaining troops, enabling them to increase their diminishing fire power. The casualties sustained by the company weakened its defenses finally allowing the enemy to break through the left flank. Lieutenant Brinson gave the order to withdraw and remaining behind as the unit fell back, he fought a delaying action until the company had left the hill. Lieutenant Brinson’s indomitable heroism and aggressive determined leadership reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
