Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 2 (January 1, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Delbert L. Brewer (ASN: 0–959145), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the evening of 26 September 1952, a platoon of Company B, 1st Battalion, led by Lieutenant Brewer, was occupying defensive positions on an outpost in the vicinity of Kojang-ni, Korea, and was preparing to attack an enemy-held position referred to as “Big Nori.” Suddenly hostile troops, supported by intense mortar and artillery fire, began advancing upon the friendly unit. The fierceness of the hostile fire left the friendly forces confused and disorganized. Lieutenant Brewer, comprehending the gravity of the situation, immediately and fearlessly exposed himself to the hostile fire as he dashed about the shrapnel-torn area shouting words of encouragement to his men, directing their fire, and trying to reorganize them. Then aware that the enemy aggression would be disastrous if the friendly unit wasn’t completely organized in a very few moments, Lieutenant Brewer, ignoring his personal safety, grasped a machine gun and placed the weapon on an exposed and advantageous position from where he could fire upon the foe. Oblivious to the ferocious enemy barrage, and remaining in his precarious position, he commenced delivering such accurate, crucial, and effective fire upon the onrushing hostile forces that they became confused and were forced to discontinue their fanatical advance. Lieutenant Brewer’s men were so inspired by his daring feats that they quickly reorganized and delivered such a devastating hail of fire upon the foe that they suffered numerous casualties and were forced to retreat. Lieutenant Brewer’s outstanding gallantry, inspirational leadership, and intrepid actions prevented the strategic friendly outpost from being captured by the enemy and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
