The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Gordon N. Breedlove (ASN: RA-3471439), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 and 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Kach’il-bong, Korea. During the night of 2 September when Company L launched an attack on a strategic enemy-held hill, Corporal Breedlove led his men through the enemy lines skillfully maneuvering them into positions. Under his able leadership the objective was secured without a single casualty among his men. He then directed his men in setting up a defensive perimeter. Immediately after the perimeter had been completed a numerically superior enemy force launched a counterattack. Corporal Breedlove, although wounded in the initial assault, remained with his men and directed them in repelling the hostile force. In the early hours of the following morning, hostile forces launched several other counterattacks but, through Corporal Breedlove’s courage and exemplary leadership, they were forced to withdraw due to heavy enemy casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Breedlove reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
