Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 101 (April 22, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert J. Brandon (ASN: 0-1881732), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. In the early morning hours of 3 April 1953 hostile forces launched an attack against friendly positions on outpost “Harry”, in the vicinity of Surang-ni, Korea. The first wave of the fanatical foe charged right through their own artillery and gained the friendly trenches. A furious hand-to-hand battle ensued in which Lieutenant Brandon, Commanding Officer of Company G, 2d Battalion, displayed outstanding heroism. With no regard for his personal safety, he completely exposed himself to hostile observation and fire to direct the fire of his men, to place his men in the most advantageous positions, and to personally engage in the pitched hand-to-hand battle. Although lightly wounded in this engagement, he personally accounted for two enemy dead. When the first hostile wave was disposed of, Lieutenant Brandon, seeing that another wave was charging the friendly positions, ordered his men into their bunkers and, remaining alone in the open trench, called in friendly artillery fire on the outpost. Although endangered by the friendly artillery barrage, he remained in an exposed position and continued to direct fire which dispersed the hostile attack and inflicted numerous casualties among them. Lieutenant Brandon’s extraordinary heroism and fervent devotion to duty and to his comrades reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
