Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 343 (August 8, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Floyd E. Bowers, Jr. (ASN: US-55052639), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 8 June 1951, near Chorwon, Korea, Corporal Bower’s squad, with the mission of contacting the enemy from the rear and drawing their fire in order to allow the main body of troops to deliver a frontal assault, was suddenly subjected to a hail of enemy fire while moving around the hostile flank which wounded Corporal Bowers in the shoulder and necessitated the squad’s immediate withdrawal. Although in great pain, he refused to leave his exposed position and delivered intense fire from his automatic rifle on the hostile force. This courageous action compelled the enemy to concentrate their fire on him and permitted his comrades to safely withdraw to more tenable positions and repulse the enemy assault which followed. Corporal Bowers’ gallant initiative and exemplary aggressive actions enabled the company to seize the objective with a minimum of casualties and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
