The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Clifford Jefferson Boring (ASN: US-53015218), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 July 1951, near Chich-on, Korea, as Private Boring’s platoon was engaged in an assault on Hill 586, its advance was halted by intense fire from an enemy bunker emplacement. At that moment, Private Boring, voluntarily and with complete disregard for his safety, single-handedly charged the fortification. Braving the hail of fire, he hurled two hand grenades into the bunker, silencing the position and enabling the platoon to advance again, however, in accomplishing this fearless action, he was mortally wounded by a bursting enemy hand grenade. Private Boring’s outstanding gallantry and valorous aggressiveness reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
